About Tifac-Core Introduction
Velammal Engineering College (VEC) signed an MOU with Technology Information Forecasting and Assessment Council (TIFAC) on September 23 2005 to create a Centre Of Relevance and ...... Excellence (CORE) in Pervasive Computing Technologies. With this, VEC joins an exclusive club of 25 other top institutions who have created COREs in various domains.
About Mission Reach
The Technology, Information, Forecasting and Assessment Council (TIFAC) - an autonomous body under the Department of Science and Technology (DST) launched MISSION REACH in the year 2000 - a mission embedded in its Technology Vision 2020. A concerted and unparalleled effort in the area of higher education, Mission REACH (Relevance & Excellence in ACHieving new heights in educational institutions) endeavors to put in place, a structured mechanism that can produce world-class manpower of direct relevance to Indian industries/organizations who can take up the challenges of fierce global competition. Amalgamating the three key pillars of economic growth - Industry, the Government and the Educational Institutions, Mission REACH aims to tap India's vast man-power resources and higher educational institutions, to turn them into a force to reckon with. The Unique triangular linkage of the institute, government and the industry provide a strong foundation to each TIFAC-CORE.

Under the Mission REACH, institutions are being targeted for creating Centres Of Relevance and Excellence (COREs). These TIFAC COREs are mandated for excellence in focused areas. Through these Centres, technology generation and skill upgradation of the workforce is to be done on a continuous basis. Nucleated by TIFAC, nestled in the partnering institution and nurtured by the stake-holding industrial partners, these TIFAC-COREs are today unleashing India's potential by converging all the possible resources in focused areas. Various TIFAC-COREs have been established across the country in diverse areas such as Petroleum Reservoir Engineering - Assam, Herbal Drugs - Ooty, Ergonomics and Human Factors Engineering - Mumbai, Fiber Optics and Optical Communications - Delhi and Wireless Technologies - Madurai to name a few. Velammal Engineering College is pursuing research in the domain of PERVASIVE COMPUTING TECHNOLOGIES.

TIFAC CORE in Pervasive Computing Technologies

Rapid advances for digital electronics have made computers faster, cheaper, and smaller. Similar progress in communications technology has provided users virtually unlimited bandwidth anywhere and at any time. The resulting combination of virtually free computation and ubiquitous network access has fuelled the new domain of pervasive computing. Pervasive computing envisions environments richly lathered with computation, communication and networked devices and mobile users interacting with their environment using speech and vision, with secure access to personal or public data.

The TIFAC-CORE will seek to act as a catalyst for realizing the vision of pervasive (or ubiquitous) computing, described by Mark Weiser nearly a decade ago. The essence of this vision is the creation of environments saturated with computing and wireless communication, yet gracefully integrated with human users. Many key building blocks needed for this vision are now viable commercial technologies: wearable and handheld computers, high bandwidth wireless communication, location sensing mechanisms, and so on. The challenge is to combine these technologies into a seamless whole. This requires a multidisciplinary approach provided by our CORE, involving hardware designers, wireless engineers, human-computer interaction specialists and software agent developers.
